What Can You Do? |
Some Useful Tips
from Volunteers from GreenBeings and
residents at Bandar Sungai Long. |
|
Get Together
Don't sit and wait for
things to happen. Organise a regular get together with your
neighbours to promote "Community Togetherness".
|
Where to Meet?
The gatherings can be held at a park in the neighbourhood or a neighbour's
home. Get to
know the principals of schools in the area to see if they can offer their
school premises for such gatherings. Offer to allow students
of the schools and their parents to participate.
Events You Can Organise
It can be a gathering for a
"Pot Luck" party or "Family Camping Night Out" or free
lessons on gardening, dancing, cooking or Tai Chi. |
|
The
Objectives? |
Issues to
consider looking into:
|
-
Generate
activities that will help improve the living environment of your
neighbourhood.
|
- Look around your neighbourhood. Is
the park there clean and well taken care of? Is it a safe place
for your children to play in? Can the community work together to
make it a greener and better place?
|
-
Work
together to find solutions to grouses encountered in your
neighbourhood.
|
- Have the rates of break ins or accidents
in the area increased? Are there ways to alert everyone of the
dangers to reduce these incidents?
|
-
Look out
for and make full use of resources available in the neighbourhood to
help create
activities that will inspire everyone, especially the young, to lead a healthy and meaningful
lifestyle.
|
- Is your neighbour good at cooking or
handiwork? Will she be able to volunteer some time to provide
free lessons?
- Is the park in the neighbourhood fully
and properly utilized? Will you be able to find someone who can
provide free football training to the children in the neighbourhood?
|
-
Go on a
fund raising drive. Use fund to improve the environment in the
neighbourhood or to help a charitable or non profit organisation.
|
- Organise a fun fair. Look out for
ideas on handicraft you can produce for
sales. Consider replacing some of the material
required with leftover stuff you can find at home.
- Clear clutters from your home by organising a
car boot sales. Get your neighbours to do the
same.
- Check out Malaysia-based Charity
Directory
www.hati.org.my
for a listing of non-profit organisations to support.

A
Voluntary Start
|
What you can do.
|
|
Start by volunteering to initiate this project yourself. List down the things
or hobbies you are good at
and would like to share with your neighbours. Get your neighbours to do the
same and start the project rolling with lots of activities. |
Consider giving lessons or talks on
subjects that you are good at. It can be a hobby or
favourite pastime, such as gardening, singing or dancing, etc.
Let us start a workshop to help homemakers and single parents start a home
based business.
